A Trout Fishing Paradise
The icy cold (45°-52° F) water that flows from Greers Ferry Dam has created a trout fishing paradise that continues 29 miles downriver. The Greers Ferry National Fish Hatchery, located just below Greers Ferry Dam at JFK Park, produces 700,000 rainbow and brook trout annually. Hundreds of thousands of trout are introduced into the Little Red River each year. While stocked trout provide great fishing opportunities for Little Red River anglers, the River is also home to a thriving population of wild brown trout. The River’s brown trout population is entirely self sustaining (not stocked). Wild brown trout ranging from 5 to 8 pounds are common, but much larger (and warier) monster brown trout thrive in the river’s cool, clear waters. The Little Red River’s most famous catch was a 40 pound 4 ounce monster caught by Howard “Rip” Collins, on 4.5-pound test line in 1992.
Fall Fishing on the Little Red River
Fall is the Little Red River’s “prime time.” Each year, between mid-October and November, the Little Red River’s brown trout spawn on the river’s many shoals, including nearby Cow Shoals. The brown trout’s spawning run coincides with the emergence of beautiful fall foliage in the Little Red River Valley’s pastoral Ozark foothills. The Little Red River’s unspoiled waters provide habitat for a dazzling array of other animals including otter, deer, great blue heron, song birds, ducks, geese, woodpeckers, and beautiful bald eagles.
